April selection: The Merry Spinster.

MerrySpinster.indd

Beginning with April, we’ll have two meetings each month. (See the calendar in the sidebar for full details.) This provides more flexibility for our members. Attend either or both. Or none! Totally your choice. But we’ll miss you if you don’t come!

SUNDAY, April 15, we’ll meet at 1:00 pm

WEDNESDAY, April 18, we’ll meet at 7:00 pm.

Our April selection is Daniel Mallory Ortberg’s The Merry Spinster, an ingenious reimagining of classic fairy tales and mythology. By the end of the second story, I was shaking my head at the disparity between the fun, lighthearted, whimsical cover design and the depth and sophistication of Ortberg’s writing. The marketing isn’t doing this collection justice. If you loved Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties, you’ll love this one as well.

You may know Daniel from his writing (as Mallory Ortberg) as one of the founders of the defunct site The Toast (a feminist Onion, more or less), his sharp and funny Texts from Jane Eyre, and in his current role as Slate’s Dear Prudence.

Pick up your copy of The Merry Spinster at the Astoria Bookshop and receive 10% off. Thanks as always to Lexi & crew for hosting us!
